Thanks for this article! You've convinced me to revamp my vault and simplify it drastically.
One question: Are your type/area/keyword properties set up to be the tag type? If not, how do you search for them? They don't show up in the tags /or/ the properties on the right side menu...
They aren’t properties, they are just tags. They should show up in the tag pane, and there you get all of the delicious nesting!
If you are having trouble seeing them, it could be that you have set it as frontmatter.. A few people have reached out to me about this before. I don’t actually do this, and this will stop the tags from registering.
I did play with setting them as properties, the property tag type doesn’t allow for nesting :(
> I don’t think there is a decent product that exists that allows you to collate a really good collection of both written content and visual content. However for me, I quite like having the separation of concerns between a “visual” app and an app for “writing”.
i have the same mymind+obsidian setup, really wish sublime.app was the holy grail, but obsidians file over app ruined everything else for me 😭
Yeah :) I like Sublime, the ethos and vibe is really up my street, but I just don’t want any social element to this. This in part is why I prefer MyMind over something like Cosmos.
The way my brain works is that if I know anyone is going to potentially see something, then instantly I am focused on curating an image. Whereas because MyMind is so private, it is much more a brilliant mess, and that is exactly what I want it to be.
I guess its like comparing the writing you do for a blog, to the writing you do in your personal notepad. Both have their place, but the personal writing is going to be much more raw.
I resisted Obsidian for years, it seemed clunky and overcomplicated by plug ins etc. But leaning Claude has brought me back and I'm in the early stages of figuring my way through. I've also been using MyMind erratically, but I love the clarity of your positioning: My Mind for images, Obsidian mainly for text.
Are you primarily connecting Obsidian with Claude chat, code, or cowork? I thought Cowork was going to be the best fit. But I have my vault in ICloud and Cowork gets confused with it. So I'm currently loading up my claude.md file and others for every chat. A bit of a faff.
Obsidian is as overcomplicated as you make it :) I use very few plugins and don’t use some of the newer (in my opinion more complicated) features it offers.
Yeah the two work really well together. I would like to synthesise it a little bit neater than I did in the article at some point. MyMind is in many cases a filter for me because its also where I capture articles/written content that I want to read.
I only really use Claude code. The way I structure is I have a “Claude” folder which contains everything I want it to have context of (including http://claude.md, vaults, code repos), and then I use that as the root. Not sure how configurable a setup like that is with iCloud, but works well with Git.
Great article. I love seeing people’s setups and workflow. I am also patiently waiting (after trying 63629 apps/programs) for the perfect PKM system to come along, something that is intuitive, useful for any type of media, ai capable and free (or cheap), mobile/desktop and aesthetically please lol is that too much to ask? I’ve also been using my mind and I go between obsidian and notion but both of them just aren’t quite perfect

Great article, how did you manage to get the backlinks pinned to the bottom of your screen to look like that? It looks great
Thank you! It’s actually one of the core plugins.
Settings → Core Plugins → Backlinks → Show backlinks at bottom of notes
Thank you!! I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time

This is really useful and timely for me, thanks.

You are welcome Paul.
